I hurt. I hurt so deeply, I felt the pain searing in my bones and jabbing like a hot poker into my heart. I knew nothing would make it better as the memories pulled from the crevices of my mind, detailing the bad and the ugly, filling my thoughts with regret as I slipped into the darkness. . .
When I was eight, my mother was dying of cancer, my father lost his job, and the bank kicked us out of our house. I was forced to move to the strange town of Arlis, Texas where my father and I slept in our car in the hospital parking lot. Desperate and hopeless, we lived on fumes of our former life.
Then one night, everything changed forever. A knock on the car window brought a family into my life that I only wanted to shut out. I hated charity and I hated the Masons. Well, except one. He made it impossible to hate him.
Jess Mason had the biggest blue eyes and ornery smile of any boy I had ever seen. He was a ray of sunshine in my dark world. A boy full of adventure, dragging me across the meadow of Sprayberry Ranch; a beautiful Texas paradise full of horses and tree houses that got us into more trouble than anyone ever imagined.
Jess was my everything as a kid until we grew up and the rules changed. Instead of living happily ever after with a boy full of love. . . I destroyed it.

Get ready for another super epic love story that is bound to keep you at the edge of your seats. Alex and Jess’ childhood love story is extraordinary, you will not read anything like it. No book in the world could every compare the loss and pain that Alex had endured during her childhood and present day. Alex was a beautiful little girl who was loved equally by both of her parents, but her mother suddenly fell ill and was not able to surpass cancer. The doctor treating Alex’s mother, Dr. Mason was a generous man who offered them a new life. Alex’s family was bankrupt because of her father neglecting his job to watch over his wife. It was selfish of Alex to actually wish her mother was already dead so that they could get on with their lives. For a girl her age, I didn’t know how it was possible for her mind to be corrupted so soon. Trauma made it easier for her to sin against her parents. But a new light entered her life and made her smile again. Jess, the son of the Doctor Mason.
“I was his and he was mine… I needed him. I needed him the way I needed air; a little bit every day just to survive in this dark world.”
He was the gift she couldn’t give back. Having a new friend made her seem more gentle and grateful. The Masons gave her a house, clothes, food and education. Who wouldn’t want to kill the Mason? Alex didn’t cooperate as her father would have thought. She had a rotten core ever since her mother’s incident, but she didn’t reveal any of her hatred towards the Mason. Jess saved his new friend from ruin.
Alex accepted everything the Masons gave to her with a heavy heart. She accepted their son as her new best friend, but that friendship was expected to fall apart. She couldn’t take away the most precious thing in the Mason’s life. She loved that boy with all of her might, but did not have the right to take him away. That tore my little heart into pieces. It’s going to do a lot more as you continue reading.
“His blue eyes spoke a thousand words all rolled into a heartfelt stare. They calmed the panic inside my body. In the silence between two friends, the air carried an entire conversation. His dark lashes blinked back a vow I knew he meant more than anything. ‘I promise this will not destroy us.”
Jess was my everything as a kid until we grew up and the rules changed. Instead of living happily ever after with a boy full of love. . . I destroyed it.

The story has a slow burn, but the writing kept you in control and tethered to the story. I couldn’t put the book down. The Mason List was written in present and past chapters of Alex’s life. It began with a traumatic experience that you won’t be able to understand, but you will soon…only on the last few chapters that just screams SHIIIT-WTF JUST HAPPENED! I had tears everywhere, I wanted to curse SD Hendrickson for making my stomach lurch and my heart stop beating. From slow and heartbreaking, it began to race and just stab you in the back multiple times. But I didn’t want the story to end.
There’s actually a lot of things you can say after reading The Mason List, but you won’t be able to easily put out the words because this books needs more than a dictionary to be able to pour out your feels. I truly felt everything the author had to offer and I was always dying to see what happens next. You won’t be able to let go and this story is something you’ll never forget.
“You know I’m not trying to hurt you.”
“Really? Then why does it feel that way? I love you. And you’re choosing not to love me back. That hurts pretty damn bad.”
